Photos of Ljubljana
Here you can view some of my best photos of Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. Small, cosy and compact is what best describes the Slovene capital. With a population of around 288,000 and just 163 sq kms in size, it may pale in comparison to other capital cities, but therein lies its charm. The city sprawls around the magnificent medieval castle, sitting atop a 375-metre hill standing guard over the baroque and modernist buildings of the old town and centre. From its 19th century watchtower you not only get a commanding view Ljubljana’s heart and soul, but the sprawling alpine mountains to the north and Ljubljana Marshes to the south. The best view of the Ljubljana castle itself is from the restaurant or terrace cafe in the Nebotičnik building on Slovenska Cesta.
The Ljubljanica River bisects the city. Like most capitals, it’s a lively and vibrant place with a wealth of museums, galleries, baroque churches, restaurants, cafes and nightlife. The unique architectural sights such as the Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, Central Marketplace and National Library are all down to the vision of Slovenia’s most celebrated architect: Jože Plečnik.
