Fairytale Lake Bled
Here you can view some of my best photos of Lake Bled in Slovenia. This amazing place is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, and deservedly so. According to local legend, Lake Bled was made by a troupe of fairies who once lived on the island where the church now sits. Angry at the local people for allowing their cattle to graze on their hill despite their protests, the fairy queen Ziva gathered her troupe. Together they summoned the waters from the surrounding mountains. The torrents flooded the valley and sealed off their hill forever; making their abode into an island in the middle of a lake.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary now sits on the island. Nearby, a medieval castle sits atop a small cliff by the lakeside. The Karavanke mountain chain forms a stunning backdrop to this. From the eastern shore, you can even get a glimpse of the Julian Alps. While the term “fairy tale location” can often seem a little cliche, when it comes to Lake Bled there is no other way to describe it.
