This is where I write about the places in my photographs: Interesting stories, useful information, how I came to take them, the history and legends attached to them, and my own time there.
Most of the stories come from three places. Slovenia is my wife’s home country and where I spend much of my time. On Dorset’s Jurassic Coast I run photography workshops. In Ireland I lived on and off in Wexford from 1999 to 2004, and in 2003 I set off from there to walk 280 miles to Donegal. Other stories and photos are from places I have travelled in over the years.
I’ve had a lifelong interest in folklore and co-wrote Mysterious World: Ireland, a guide to the country’s ancient sites and legends. So alongside the practical detail you’ll meet saints, high kings, a haunted house and at least one drowned warrior king.
Each story links to prints of the places it covers. If you’re after camera settings and location tips, they’re on my photography blog.
Lake Bled’s island church in icy mist. Third place, Professional Photographer of the Year 2014.
Each story links to prints of the places it covers, and you can browse the full collection by place or theme. All prints are made to order from my own photographs, in sizes up to 1.5 metres.
Techniques, camera settings and location guides for photographers are on my photography blog. If you’d rather learn in person, I run photography workshops in Slovenia and on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
My longer travel articles about Slovenia, Ireland, Scotland, Croatia and the Americas are on ianmiddleton.co.uk.
I’m Ian Middleton, a British travel and landscape photographer and writer. I took up photography after a four-month journey around Mexico and have been taking photographs since 1996. My photo of Lake Bled’s island church in icy mist came third in the travel category of Professional Photographer of the Year 2014, and my work has appeared in Lonely Planet, The Guardian and Landscape Photography Magazine. Ian was absolutely brilliant throughout the process of ordering a print of one of his photos from Lake Bohinj. His communication was very quick and clear despite my order landing just before the festive season, and he even checked in to ensure that I’d received the print. The final product made a lovely birthday gift!!Posted on Google![]()

The Journal on ianmiddletonphotography.com is for people who love the places in my photographs and might want a print of one. My photography blog, at blog.ianmiddletonphotography.com, is for photographers, with techniques, camera settings and location guides. Some places appear on both, and I link between them where it helps.
