Photos of Portland Bill

In this gallery you can view my best photos of Portland Bill in Dorset, England, a narrow promontory at the southern end of the Isle of Portland. It’s a popular location for seascape photography due to its dramatic location, jutting out into the sea with waves crashing from all around. It’s two most distinctive features are the Lighthouse and Pulpit Rock.

Standing 41 metres tall and built in 1906, the Trinity House Lighthouse at Portland Bill is a fully functioning lighthouse, so it’s also possible to photograph it in operation at dawn or dusk, or even against a starry background at night.

Pulpit Rock is an artificial stack that was left behind after quarrymen dug away a natural arch in the 1870s.

Portland Bill is just one of many great photography locations lying along the Jurassic Coast, a stretch of coastline with geology that dates back 185 million years. The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
